开放源代码倡议组织（OSI）经过两年的努力，发布了开放源代码人工智能定义的第一版候选版本（RC1）。该定义旨在澄清开放源代码人工智能的争议，并规定四项基本自由：无需许可使用系统、研究系统运作方式、为任何目的修改系统，以及分享系统。
关于训练数据，OSI选择了一种折衷方案，要求提供关于用于训练系统的数据的“足够详细信息”，而非完整数据集。
这一要求引发了一些人的质疑，认为若训练数据不完全开放，则基于这些数据的大型语言模型也不能被视为开放源代码。
最终版的开放源代码人工智能定义计划于2024年10月28日在All Things Open大会上发布。
