Ruby on Rails的创始人兼Basecamp的首席技术官David Heinemeier Hansson批评Automattic要求WP Engine收入的8%违反开源原则和GPL许可证。他认为，这种做法破坏了开源许可的清晰性和确定性，威胁到整个WordPress以外的开源完整性。
他指出，开源是一种礼物的交换，接受许可证条款后，不能再附加其他隐性义务。
他提到，Automattic可以随时更改他们的许可证，但这不会影响已经使用的软件，并可能导致项目的分叉。
Hansson认为，Automattic试图一边保持WordPress的开源光辉，一边又想从竞争者身上获取利益，这样是不合理的。
