亚太网络信息中心的首席科学家Geoff Huston提出了关于全球未能转向IPv6的理论。他指出，IPv6的开发主要是由于担心全球IP地址耗尽影响互联网发展。
然而，Huston认为，IPv6并没有提供IPv4所没有的新功能，只是地址更大而已。
设计者原以为随着IPv4需求的迅速增长，IPv6会迅速普及。
但实际情况是，在IPv6推出后的几年里，并没有太多关注这一过渡，反而由于移动互联网的迅猛增长，网络运营商不得不将资源集中在满足规模化的迫切需求上。
在科技飞速发展的今天，停留在过去的恐惧未来，也许正是我们最大的敌人。
