美国宇航局局长比尔·尼尔森今天宣布，美国宇航员苏妮塔·威廉姆斯和巴里·威尔莫尔将在SpaceX Crew-9任务中在国际空间站上停留80多天后于明年2月返回。这两名宇航员最初计划在6月5日成功发射波音Starliner后在国际空间站上停留8天，然后搭乘同一飞船降落在地球上。
然而，在与国际空间站对接时，由于推进器故障、氦气泄漏和阀门问题困扰了已经拖延很久的Starliner，这些计划发生了变化。在国际空间站停靠的飞船上受限访问后，美国宇航局的白沙测试设施的测试显示，变形的聚四氟乙烯密封圈可能是导致飞船推进器故障的原因之一。
